Arguably the heart of Young Royals — or at least the element that keeps watchers intrigued — is the love interaction between two of the main characters, Willhelm and Simon.
In season 1, the two become enthralled in a sex scandal after August records a video of the two from Willhelm’s bedroom at Hillerska. The only issue, however, is that Simon is the only one visible in the video and despite the speculation, Willhelm denies that he is in the video to protect his reputation as Crown Prince and the Royal Family at large.
As a result of Willhelm’s actions, the relationship between the two comes to an end at the end of season 1, with Simon refusing to be Willhelm’s secret. Nonetheless, with the arrival of season 2, it is clear that Simon and Wilhelm still have feelings for one another.
The question on everyone’s lips then, is whether or not Simon and Willhelm end up together in season 2, or does Willhelm’s role as Crown Prince prevent the two from being together? We’re taking a deep dive into the relationship of the two as a whole from start to finish.
The history between Simon and Willhelm
Willhelm and Simon immediately hit it off during the first episode of the show, when Willhelm notices Simon singing in the school choir and is clearly in admiration of him. They don’t be come friends, however, until the next episode, when they become friends and start hanging out. August proves to be a pain in the side for the two, however, and regularly interrupts them when they’re getting close.
The two later kiss for the first time at the end of episode 2 after watching a movie in which they rather awkwardly touch hands — this gives me flashbacks to The Fosters, when Jude and Connor hold fingers in the cinema for the first time.
The two eventually stard hanging out more and more and begin a secret relationship, with Willhelm in the closet and having never experimented with a guy before (as far as we know). This culminates in their relationship being ruined, yet again, by August who records the two whilst they are making out.
When news spreads of the video, which August releases out of spite, Willhelm is desperate to protect his image and denies that he is in the video despite promising Simon that he would accept too that he is in the video. This ultimately ends the relationship between the two.
Do Willhelm and Simon get back together in season 2?
Season 2 provides many obstacles for Simon and Willhelm , even after he returns to Hillerska from court. Simon eventually begins hanging out with a boy from the stables, Marcus, in order to try and move on from Willhelm.
Willhelm openly admits to his friends that he is in love with Simon and that their distance from one another hurts. Nonetheless, it is clear that Simon is still in love with Wilhelm and it is killing him also to be apart.
Eventually, Marcus learns that Simon is still in love with Willhelm and that they will never be serious. Simon tries to play it off that he isn’t ready for a relationship, but he begins hanging out with Willhelm again.
In a shocking turn of events, Willhelm offers to abdicate the throne for Simon, a rather shocking 360 turn from his earlier attempts to protect his status as the Crown Prince at all costs. Simon appreciates this, but agrees that he and Wilhelm can keep their relationship private until Willhelm is 18 and able to make his own decisions.
At the end of season 2, Willhelm gives a speech for the schools 120th anniversary. Despite being given a speech, Willhelm deviates from this and, after sharing a smile with Simon, admits that he was in fact the other participant in the video with Simon.
This more than likely sets up season 3 of the show — if it returns — and Willhelm’s actions are bound to have huge consequences. The announcement will definitely have the Queen scrambling to cover up the PR catastrophe that Willhelm has once again created for the Royal Family.
Season 2 of Young Royals is available to stream now on Netflix after releasing on November 1, 2022.
