Television Adaptations of comic book series — or graphic novels — are becoming increasingly more common, especially in 2022 and beyond. From The Umbrella Academy, Locke & Key, and Moonknight, the list is about to get even longer with the upcoming adaptation of Paper Girls by Amazon Studios.
Paper Girls is an upcoming television adaptation of the thirty-issue comic book series of the same name created by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Cliff Chiang. The show, which is set in 1988, follows the adventures of four paper girls who find themselves caught in a war between two factions of time travellers. This propels them on an adventure through time as they attempt to save humanity from destruction.
The show is written by Fola Goke-Pariola and directed by Georgi Banks-Davis, Mairzee Almas, Destiny Ekaragha, and Karen Gaviola. Brian K. Vaughan, the creator of the comic book series, is also credited as an executive producer of the show.
When Will Paper Girls Season 1 Be Released?
Season 1 of Paper Girls is due for release on Prime Video exclusively on July 29, 2022. Subscribers to the service can watch the show at no extra cost — and this includes subscribers to Amazon Prime, as Prime Video is included as standard with this subscription.
Alternatively, those that don’t have Prime Video can take advantage of Prime Video trials, which last for 7 days and should be sufficient for watching the show. Prime subscriptions renew at $14.99/£7.99 a month, or students can bag a subscription at a reduced cost of $6.49/£3.99
How Many Episodes Will Paper Girls Have?
Paper Girls has been scheduled for an 8 episode release, and this is what will be released onto Prime Video on July 29, 2022. It has not been announced whether the series will have subsequent seasons, but it is likely that Amazon Studios will announce this — or the fact that the show will only receive one season — after the show has been released for a while.
There is plenty of canonicity to draw from, with 30 issues, so it’s likely that if the show does well, it could receive subsequent seasons to cover the content sufficiently.
Who Are the Creators?
Paper Girls is based off the comic book series of the same name by Brian K. Vaughan, and also stars as executive producer of the show. He is therefore, responsible for the creation of the universe and the continuity in which the show derives from.
There were several announcements that the show would originally be developed by Stephany Folsom, however she pulled out in July 2021, leaving the job to Christopher C. Rogers, who serves as the shows sole showrunner.
The show is produced by Amazon Studios, Legendary Television, and Plan B.
Paper Girls Cast
The show has a diverse and experienced cast list, comprising of Sofia Rosinsky (MacKenzie Coyle), Camryn Jones (Tiffany Quilkin), Riley Lai Nelet (Erin Tieng), Ali Wong (Adult Erin), Nate Corddry (Larry), and Fina Strazza (K.J. Brandman) in the main cast. Adina Porter is also credited as “Prioress”.
Little has been announced about the wider cast members, but it is assumed that as the release date approaches, more cast members will be announced in recurring and guest roles.
