When will season three of Outer Banks air?

Netflix has caused quite a stir with their latest tweet, and it has got fans questioning, when exactly is the third season of Outer Banks going to air?

The third season of Outer Banks was confirmed in December 2021, and since then, Netflix has been quite tight-lipped about when exactly the series would return. Netflix did, however, recently reveal in a tweet that development and filming on the third season has just begun, so it is difficult to surmount if it will land on our screens anytime soon.

One can hope that development goes quick and it is possible that we may see the third season as early as summer of this year — this would follow the one year gap between the first and second series.

Which Outer Banks cast members will return?

It is expected that the majority — if not all — of the main cast members will return for a third season, and perhaps for many more to come. Show creator Jonas Pate cited that there is a high chance that the series would return for a fourth and even fifth series; this would all be dependent on getting the green light from Netflix, obviously.

It’s almost certain — almost being the keyword there — that the Pogues will return, meaning we will see the return of Chase Stokes, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss and Rudy Pankow. Previous rumours that Bailey would not return for a third season were quickly squashed by the actress following her split with Stokes earlier last year.

It would be nice to see the return of some of the other cast members, too, however, and it is highly likely that we will see the return of Rafe (Drew Starkey), Ward (Charles Esten) and Topper (Austin North).

What is likely to happen?

Life for the Pogues is not exactly fun and games and, in the past two seasons they’ve had a hell of a ride. Whilst at numerous points in time they’ve held the treasure and the Cross of Santo Domingo, they have unsurprisingly lost it at every opportunity too.

Drawing the previous season to a close we saw an encounter between John B’s father (who is very much alive despite what we might have thought) and Carla. John B’s father agreed to help Carla track down the Shroud of Turin and in return, she was to help John B and his friends.

It’s entirely likely that the hunt for the Shroud will continue in the third season and entirely likely that we will see a reunion between John B and his father. This has been confirmed by Jonas Pate, who told Entertainment Weekly that there would be an eventual reunion between the two — but this might cause more issues than it solves, and produces a conundrum for John B.

It’s going to be instrumental and maybe the spine [of season 3] basically. It’s obviously a gigantic revelation that’s going to power a huge part of the third season.

We’re hoping that the reunion between John B and his father is the answer to all of our prayers and we see the Pogues finally come to a victory and fulfil their dreams — and John B’s fathers — of finding the treasure and living happily ever after.

It would also be good if we saw more of a development of the relationship between Kiara (Madison Bailey) and Pope (Jonathan Daviss). PopBuzz cites that the relationship between the two is likely to be explored in the third season after being held back in the first and second. It’s something we definitely want to see, for sure, but the effect it might have on the dynamic of the Pogues is something we’re scared of a little.

Conclusions

We’re definitely looking forward to this season and hope it drops sometime during 2022; this would make the most logical sense given Netflix’s erratic publication history, but we’re not getting out hopes up.
